Pick Your Carrier Model:

How to get optimal network performance for your business

As the demand for more robust and efficient networking is growing, the ability for businesses to adapt and innovate is critical. Traditional approaches to network infrastructure, once considered cutting-edge, have given way to more agile and efficient solutions.

In our whitepaper on ‘Pick Your Carrier’, we explore how a combination of the NBN and SD-WAN technology has transformed businesses by delivering more adaptable, resilient networks. We also explain how the transport-agnostic overlay which SD-WAN creates provides businesses with greater choice and control, enabling them to thrive in the modern network environment.

Pick Your Carrier: Case Study

Keeping Australia's communities connected

auspost delivery rider riding a bike

With more than 4,000 sites spread across the country, supporting more than 12 million households, Australia Post has one of the largest networks in the country.

Beyond delivering mail, Australia Post acts as a community hub in many of Australia’s smaller towns, providing residents with services from banking and bill payments to product purchases.

Keeping Australia’s communities connected is a critical service and any network downtime can leave customers stranded. A robust, high-speed internet connection that delivers excellent uptime and reliability is essential.

To deliver more reliable and accessible services, Australia Post partnered with Orro Pty Ltd to undertake a two-year program to transition 4,000+ Australia Post sites to high-speed business nbn® connectivity and intelligent network management services.

Challenge

With over 4,000 locations and over 70,000 endpoint devices, Australia Post’s ageing and limited legacy network was becoming unreliable, leading to increased network outages.

In December 2019, Orro® commenced the transformation of Australia Post’s network to deliver greater redundancy, resilience and reliability. To achieve this, they needed to upgrade their network architecture, moving away from the existing legacy carrier-based network, to a new software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN), which would enable improved network performance and greater efficiencies.

Solution

With an extensive program initiated over a two-year period, Australia Post completed the milestone network transformation project to create a more efficient network, reduce operating costs and deliver a high-performance and more resilient network.

Led by Orro®, the project was one of the largest overhauls ever completed by Australia Post. Leveraging SD-WAN and business nbn’s high speed connectivity, Orro® was able to run multi-fibre links to Australia Post’s larger sites to provide redundancy, while relying on fibre and 4G wireless backup at the smaller sites.

“It was really important for us to deliver better service to our business and consumers, with high levels of uptime, better bandwidth and performance, and more cost effectiveness.

“This project has been really important to us and our customers because it helped us overhaul our ageing and limited legacy network, which was also suffering from reliability issues. We have one of the largest networks in Australia and it was important for us to be able to deliver better services to our business and also to our customers.”

Munro Farmer, CIO, Australia Post

“As Australia’s digital backbone, nbn provides the perfect platform to build a national network, particularly for such a large organisation with thousands of sites across metro and regional locations. Orro® was able to leverage business nbn® Enterprise Ethernet, nbn ethernet and Fixed Wireless networks to create an unrivalled digital experience for Australia Post built on increased performance, uptime and security.”

nbn Executive General Manager of Sales, Brendan Donohoe

Outcome

Orro® transformed over 4,000 sites within a two-year timeframe, which involved completing around 200 sites per month.

nbn is very happy with Australia Post’s and Orro® Pty Ltd’s experience with the nbn network. Of course, end customer experiences may vary. An end customer’s experience, including the speeds achieved over the nbn network, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to their premises, whether they are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like their equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan, signal reception, or how their provider designs its network). Business nbn is not available on the nbn Fixed Wireless network. Business nbn Enterprise Ethernet is only available in the nbn Fixed Line network footprint and at limited premises served by the nbn Fixed Wireless and Satellite networks. Customers should contact their preferred service provider to ask about availability and any fees and charges that may be applicable. Availability of wholesale business nbn products, product features and services depend on an end customer’s access technology and area. nbn does not provide 4G or mobile connectivity solutions. © 2023 nbn co ltd. ‘nbn’, ‘business nbn’ and nbn logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of nbn co ltd | ABN 86 136 533 741.
